File Uploads

Users can import data into the EMS by uploading files. This is useful when there is no continuous connectivity to the transactional source system, and the users rely on the one-time export of data. Different file formats are supported, including the output generated by Celonis ABAP reports.

The flow is as follows:

  1. Upload files to the EMS from local machine or Celonis Storage Manager

  2. After the upload, define the file settings, i.e. column headings, column data types, etc…

  3. Define the target table name and connection

  4. Import the files into Celonis database

Uploading Files


Non-Iatin characters are not supported in file names. Please rename your files accordingly in the "Configure Upload" dialogue before the import to avoid any failures.

You can find the File Upload by clicking on “+ Add Data Connection” and selecting “Upload Files”.

Support extensions

The following extensions as supported:

  • .xlsx

  • .xls

  • .csv

  • .xes

  • .json

  • .parq

  • gz (compressed)

  • .zip (compressed)

Upload files in bulk

You can upload files not only one-by-one but also in bulk. After the upload is over, you can define the settings of each file

Upload multiple files as one table

Sometimes the data for one table is exported into multiple files. In that case the user needs to upload these files as a one table. To simplify the process, we support uploading multiple compressed files as a one table. The prerequisite, is of course, that these files have the same schema. Otherwise the import will fail. To accomplish this, compress the related files into one zipped file, and then upload it.

The file count will show how many files are included in the table.

Upload from the EMS Storage Manager

Sometimes the files are directly uploaded to the EMS Storage Manager. To avoid additional download/upload, you can import the files directly from the Storage Manager. Note however, that there is no file browser or preview. Everything that is found in the SFTP bucket will be uploaded after you trigger the import. Afterwards, you can override the File settings, etc…, as with the files that you have uploaded from your local machine, and proceed with the import.

Upload ABAP Generated Output

If you have files extracted from SAP ECC or S/4 via the Celonis ABAP report, then you should upload them via this tool. The process is the same as for the other files. You just need to upload the files to the EMS, and the file type (ABAP vs flat) will be determined automatically based on the file name syntax. Make sure that the file name follows the ABAP output filename syntax, otherwise the file will not be recognized as an ABAP output.


The additional validations for ABAP files apply, i.e. missing files, or file name syntax. If a rule is broken, you will see an error message which will help you to apply the fix.

File Settings
Define the column types and other file settings

When the user uploads a file, the column data types are automatically deducted from the file content. However, this is not 100% accurate. It is always recommended to review the settings before triggering the import. This can be done in the “Configure Data Schema” of the file.

Rename the target table name and the target connection

When a file is uploaded, its target table name is by default set to the file name, and the target schema is set to the “Global” connection. This can be overridden in the “Configure Upload” dialogue.

Importing Files

After the files are uploaded and set up, you can start the import into Celonis. You can import the files individually, or in bulk.

If the import fails, you can click on the error status and see the error details in the Execution history dialogue, where all the executions are listed. The error is most probably related to wrong file settings, i.e. a blank column, a wrong data type, etc… You can fix the issue in the settings, and start the import again.
